Dusting the Ends

Even the tiniest trim can make a difference in long hair. Just a dusting can take you from scraggly to put-together.. I almost always dust the ends of my clients hair after any chemical service at no charge. This was a keratin smoothing client who was really nervous about losing any length. Even this few millimeters of a trim made a difference though, don't you agree?

A Short Video about Ammino Smoothing vs. Keratin Smoothing

This is a video of my collegue, Kristine Nichols, which talks a little about the differences between Amino and Keratin Smoothing. Kristine has been doing the Amino Smoothing for over a year now and is our resident expert on the process.
I still like the Keratin Smoothing by Coppola, though I think in some cases - there are people who benefit more from the Amino Smoothing. Also, the Amino smoothing is nice in that it doesn't have the three day, no wash period. But it doesn't last as long as Coppola or get the hair as straight.

Kristine currently charges $170* for the Ammino Fusion Treatment

her reply:

February 10 at 11:12am
oh my word I was just thinking I needed to email you. I LOVE IT!!! it is truly a life changing experience. Yesterday it took me only ten minutes and I wore my hair down all day, it wasn't puffy or weird at all. It is almost totally straight except for the back crown which is always my most curly area..I will be getting it done again in May I think just to keep up this amazing transformation. Thank you SO much Lynn you have given me great confidence and so much more time!

A Good Comment...

I want to share this comment I received today as well as my response.

Comment:
"Dear Lynn, it's great to know that there are some conscientious professional's in the hair care industry such as your self, willing to take the time, to avoid unseen dangers from carcinogenics in the products were often exposed to.
I also have a great deal of concern regarding manufacturers promoting their hair product's with out any significant and honest data to back their claims. Ultimately leaving the consumer, and operator as well as our environment at risk.

Still though, I can't help but wonder how someone, generally speaking... Of whom may be lacking that degree necessary in chemistry would be able to safeguard them self's from falling prey to using such alternative based product's known of making safe claims? Only to later find that NOW (a year later), a NEW study has deemed them dangerous as well?

There is allot that schepticism envolving how the FDA and other governing bodies regulate what is considered safe for human concumption, and that doesn't end here.
I believe that even being a chemist isn't always enogh to be able to distiguish what some chemicals are, or how they may react under certain conditions.
Take for instance that... There are chemical that when they combine with other factors, will morph into, or mimic particular chemicals that would inadvertently might at some point in time may be deemed unsafe, but since they cannot be categorized the same, they manage to slip under the radar, that is until eventually someone raises a red flag.

One of these so called alternative based chemicals know as Aldehyde http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldehyde may be just that, and is often found in many of the Keratin based thermal straightening systems.

So when is safe really safe?"

My response:
You raise an interesting question. I am not a chemist, that is true. I only have the information provided to me by the companies I choose to work with, which is one reason I am very selective about that process.

As a hairdresser who works with chemicals every day, I have made a choice to expose myself to certain risks. I inhale fumes from hair color, perms, this procedure and other types of relaxers on a regular basis. Anyone who colors their hair or pursues other chemical means of altering their appearance is making a similar choice. I think the best I can do is be as informed as I can. I have written a lot about my experience with the Keratin Smoothing product/procedure because I think it helps other people make their own choices. I will reiterate: I am not trying to push this product or this service. I only offer it.

In regards to the portion of your question about 'Aldehyde.' Again, I am not a chemist. I have been through many hours of training though. I have explored Keratin Smoothing by Coppola, Thermafuse Ammino Smoothing, Grund and Brazilian Blowout. What I have learned from these training classes in regards to the chemistry is that while the early smoothers used the Formaldehyde molecule as a carrier for depositing the smoothing treatment into the hair shaft, the smell was an issue. The safety concerns were similar to concerns in Nail Salons and not so much for the client. Ventilation was stressed (and again more for the repeat exposure of the operator.) After a lot of bad press about the formulas using Formaldehyde these companies switched out the carrier molecule. However they switched it to another 'Aldehyde' which is a "cousin," if you will, to Formaldehyde. Again - I am not a chemist. I only know what I've been told. My current salon is extremely well ventilated but, even still, products that have a heavy smell of any kind are unpleasant for the other clients as well as myself and my colleagues. The current formulations of the Smoothing Treatments do not have a strong smell. Once the smell was no longer an issue, I was willing to assume the operators risk of fume exposure. I was not willing to assume this risk when these treatments first came out because of the unpleasant formaldehyde smell. Once the smell was no longer an issue I was very interested because I knew there were many people who wanted this service. Again, I do not solicit this service, the clients that want it do their own research and seek it out. It's an added bonus that it’s fun to do because it can make such a dramatic impact on a clients appearance and in their lives! If people do have any concerns about the safety of this or other chemical services, I would suggest they check with their doctor before having them done.

When I perform this service I do a very meticulous job. I don’t cut any corners. I take my work ethic very seriously and it is my personal philosophy that this is what will bring me referrals and keep clients coming back. I do hair because I love to do it and it’s fun. So far as I can tell, this philosophy has served me well. I don’t know if people use the links much on the left side of the page, but you can see all the photos of the before-and-after of some models as well as feedback on their experiences. I hope that this helps people in making their decisions and that the information is useful.

Feeback: KS Model Number 2

Wow - I am so amazed by the email I received this morning from my second model! I think it speaks for itself that she went above and beyond for me on her feedback - Thank you thank you thank you! I really appreciate it..
Here is what she said:

"Keratin Smoothing By Coppola – A Week Later!
I had the Keratin treatment about a week ago and have washed my hair twice since then. I think the results are awesome! The description of the treatment is 100% accurate when it says that my hair is 95% frizz free. And like others, I agree that my hair takes less than half the time to blow dry than it did previously.

From the previous post, people can see that my hair is naturally wavy and frizzy. I want to say that now, after the treatment, after blow drying, my hair looks the way it did when I would blow dry and straighten my hair with product and a flat iron before the treatment. After blow drying, my hair looks pretty straight and very shiny/silky. Now, if I use the flat iron on top of the treatment, my hair looks awesome – like perfect locks! After Easter service yesterday, I had a friend come up to me after the service and tell me she couldn’t stop staring at my hair during the service and was wondering who had such shiny, silky looking hair! I have received several compliments on my hair and I never shy from telling them that it’s not “real” and they can have such beautiful hair too!!

As for shampoo and conditioner, I forgot to ask Lynn while I was at her salon so I did some research online and ended up buying John Masters Organics Honey & Hibiscus Reconstructing Shampoo and Conditioner. I love the way it smells and it is both sodium chloride and SLS/ALS free. Since I have both new hair and new shampoo/conditioner, I don’t know how much the new shampoo/conditioner contribute to my hair’s loveliness but it seems to be working well so I’ll stick with it for now!

Since I have also had the Japanese straightening (Thermal Reconstruction) about 5 times in my life over the last 10 years, I thought I’d write a little bit about the differences between the two treatments.

There are three main differences between the TR and Keratin Treatment (in my opinion/experience):

#1) With TR, you end up with pin-straight hair. It looks gorgeous and requires absolutely no work. Whenever I had TR done, for about 6-8 months, I could shower and go. I didn’t even have to blow dry. My hair would dry perfectly straight and look perfectly beautiful – very shiny and silky. It is definitely no-muss, no fuss!!

With the Keratin Smoothing, your hair is not pin-straight. It’s whatever your hair was, but more manageable and infinitely more shiny/silky plus almost frizz free (if not entirely frizz free). My hair is still slightly wavy but very shiny and healthy looking. However, it does take some work to make it look “perfect” (I know “perfect” is different for everyone! I mean, honestly, my hair looks great now without doing too much too it, but I like the straight/smoothed look). However, it’s way less work and time-intensive then it was when I did not have the keratin smoothing treatment.

But, because of the difference between the two treatments, you can’t really curl your hair with TR while with Keratin Smoothing, you can still style your hair, pretty much anyway you want to!
#2) With TR, although my hair was beautiful and no muss – no fuss, in about 6-8 months, it starts to look damaged and a little scraggly. And this is because, as Lynn emphasizes, TR really does damage your hair. You are rearranging the chemical bonds in your hair into a straight pattern. So, although it looks great in the beginning, it starts to get worn looking. I’m one of those who refused to get touch ups and would let it all grow out before doing it again (I’d get it done once every two years). I’d rather have perfect looking hair for 6-8 months than perpetually scraggly looking hair.

With Keratin Smoothing, your hair might start to revert back to its old self, but it’s not damaged and I highly doubt it will look as damaged and scraggly as it would with the TR, since there is no breaking and rearranging of chemical bonds.

3) To have great results with TR, it’s really important that you don’t dye your hair. It compromises the integrity of your hair so that there could be some real damage to your hair after having TR (like breakage, etc). Due to this, I have not dyed or highlighted my hair in 10 years! I’ve been stuck with the same boring color!!

However, with Keratin Smoothing, you can have dyed/treated hair. And apparently, it allows the Keratin to deeper penetrate your hair! I’m going this weekend to get my hair cut/dyed! Yay for my new hair life!!

Overall, I think the Keratin Smoothing treatment is a huge advantage over TR. It’s not as extreme. You can style your hair and do whatever you want. There’s not ridiculous looking grow-out (depending on your type of hair/texture). It gives you flexibility in terms of style, color, etc! There aren’t as many restrictions! And overall, you just have greater flexibility and I think that it’s definitely worth it. Plus, it’s not like Keratin Smoothing is inferior, it’s just different. My hair is still fabulously shiny and beautiful. Thank you so much Lynn for doing this for me!! I’ll continue to keep you updated with how my hair is doing and will also send you pics in the near future! "

Hey Lynn, I just washed it this morning and it is CRAZY how different my hair is. It is definitely curly, but a much, much looser curl that what it was before, and it is soooooooo soft. I can tell there are going to be a few days of "growing pains" as I figure out how to style my new hair. Like this morning I tried to use the diffuser and realized that I had to change the setting to low, instead of the high that I normally use. But one of my co-workers described it as "romantic" and everyone (including me) really likes how it looks. All in all, totally successful and crazy that my hair can actually still be curly, just a completely different kind of curl! I will send you photos as soon as I take them. (Oh, and I am also totally in love with the Pureology Hydrating shampoo and conditioner I bought; they smell SO good!)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi .. checking in to see if you washed it yet and what the results were???
(hope hope hope you are still happy!)

Keratin Smoothing Model Number 4!

This is an interesting case..
This model does not want her hair cut.. mostly, because of the texture, what she does is have it curled with an iron (to tame the frizz) about once a week. After a week this is about where it is:

She really doesn't like the look of her hair when it's straight, so we decided to do an experiment. I would do the regular treatment (take photos) and then use a curling iron on the treated hair. I had no way of knowing whether the curl would take immediately following the treatment, but we decided to give it a shot!
So, here are the photos of the treated hair. (note: I am going to post a whole separate post on getting long hair cut, but I totally respect people not wanting to part with length for whatever reason.. but this is about Keratin Smoothing, so I will save that for a separate post) Oh - let me do the close ups first so you can see the difference in texture (sorry the 'before' doesn't have a flash so it's a little blurry, but I think you can get the idea)

Here are the not-close-ups (pre curling iron) :

Now - I did the curls quickly and loosly (this took a long time) but I will say before hand that I have heard from her and they did not stay overnight, despite lots of hairspray etc. (I'll post what she said in a minute here).. But it does give you an idea of what you *can* do after this treatment. She's been curling it herself at home so overall it's 'worked' but I had hoped it would be like a miracle and give her frizz-free waves, but alas, it didn't. It is smooth - but she still needs to put the curls in herself. Like I said though, she CAN curl it.. ok enough - here's the photos: (note: 'before' photo is pre-straightening as well, to give the most dramatic effect)
Here is part of the email she sent me about how it held up the next day (the curling):
"The curl didn't stay : ( unfortunately, but probably would stay a little longer if I did the pin-curl thing. And thank you again so much for all your labor over it, I know you ended up staying pretty late. The pics ... really showed off your talents in how you can transform dry hair into a smooth texture - espeically the curls. I was experimenting with an iron last night and it really does look pretty with the curls in it. I think I may have to invest in some hot curlers .. as I think that will be the best way to achieve the curls on a day to day basis without too much trouble. I'll probably have you trim my hair - a little"

Now, I thought about pinning the curls to help them 'set' but since with the Coppola Smoothing they are very specific about not wearing clips or pins etc and keeping it really straight the first three days (and I was already being quite the maverick by curling it same day) I decided not to pin it.
Again, the circumstances here were very special - I *really* did not want her to walk out without it looking great, and there was no way to do that without a major cut, which was out of the question.. so curling it was my only option (other than not being happy with the way it looked). It really does look nice curled and camoflages the need to cut it.. that is the ONLY reason I curled it (didn't follow mfg directions to a "T" is what I mean).

So - like I said, an intersting case..
Please feel free to contact me for any questions, and for those of you who have contacted me, I WILL get back to you - It's been a busy week with regular work and doing models. Busy , but very fun!

Best to all!
Lynn

Hi Lynn!! Sorry, I totally meant to email you yesterday when I washed it. It looks AMAZING. Even just with blow drying (which, like you said, took way less time) my hair is super sleek and soft and doesn't look or feel dry at ALL. It's awesome because it still totally has some volume too. I LOVE IT and I pretty much always find a reason to complain about my hair but really, it's like everything I could ask for and more. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I'm sure you will be hearing similar rave reviews from your other models!

Keratin Smoothing Model Number 3!

So this was the most challenging smoothing to date because she has extremely curly hair. My main concern was using enough solution (I think I used more than necessary again.. the only downside to using more is that for the three days before you can wash it it will have some residue on it which can be annoying I'd imagine, but better safe than sorry was my thinking) and getting the flat iron close enough to the scalp to make it straight from scalp to ends. With the tighter curl this was an issue and I used the detailing flat iron for almost all of the short hair in the back as well as the usual areas for using it (around the ears, bangs etc).

I absolutely LOVED her curly hair, but she was positive this was what she wanted (one big part of that is that it reverts back over time so it's not necessarily something she will need to upkeep and it's non-damaging etc. which are all plusses...)

Well, enough words.. here's the photos!

Okay now... are you ready for this?

Here it is!!

And some more just for fun! Ta-da!!

One thing I just can't get over is how different the hair FEELS! You can't tell from the photos how soft it is, but truly, it feels so soft and smooth after this process, it's like magic! Seriously, I am very excited to hear how it all goes with everyone after the three days is up.. !
