THE SIX-FIGURE HAIRCUT CERTIFICATE

Update April 22, 2020:

Here's a photo of the practice mannequin I did. The left panel is 'before' and the right is the finished product with the styling technique. Cutting a mannequin isn't really optimal, even though it's human hair, but I'm still glad I got to do it. In particular it was nice to practice the curling technique. I look forward to doing this cut on a real person and posting some photos when I do.

TEXTURED A-LINE BOB CERTIFICATE

This was a great class. It had immediate 'real-world' impact and I was able to use the techniques I learned on a client almost immediately!

Here are the before and after photos of the first time I used these techniques and I learned a lot and have really gotten excited about the cutting technique that adds all that movement to the ends of the hair. Although it does take a little extra time, I really do think it's worth it.

Also of note, the before photo is also my haircut from about 3 months earlier with a similar shape. I had added texture the regular way with texturizing shears. You can really see how much more movement the cut has after taking this class. Totally worth the investment!

DIMENSONAL REDS AND BLONDES CERTIFICATE

This class was informative on both placement and color theory for delivering a big impact. I definitely think it helped me think about light reflection and placement of color in a new way.

Here is a vibrant red I did after this class and I am really happy with it. I would definitely call it a 'Dimensional Red!'

PRAVANA VIVIDS EVERLASTING E-CERTIFICATION

DIFFUSE GLOW TECHNIQUE

Well, we are all in the midst of the COVID19 crisis and since I have to close the salon until (as of right now) May 4th, I thought it would be a good idea to a) post all of my online class certifications to date and b) take more on-line classes.

Often times, I sabotage myself with overthinking and making things more complicated than I have to. In this case, I had these plans to do models and post photos w/ each certification but I realize now, I can do all that at a later date and not let it hold me back from getting the certifications up online.

This first one is for a quick technique certification for a foil technique using Joico lightner and Joico products. The foil placement was the reason I was interested in it and I've already used the key placement of bright pieces in the front and sides, working it into my usual repertoire to ad some pop   so it was definitely worth the time.

Martin Parsons and my first "Celebrity Photo"

At the Vegas International Beauty Show in 2013 I was fortunate to take a class with the Up-Do Master himself, Martin Parsons. I also worked up the nerve to visit him at his booth and chat with him (he's a delightfully gracious man!) and ask for a photo with him.

It is the first "Celebrity Hairstylist Photo I ever got!

What a treat!

I really regret that it's taken me this long to ad this to my blog here.

Hopefully going forward I can do a better job at being timely about these things!

Certified Lash Extensionist since 2012

I always like continuing education and staying up on the latest trends so when lash extensions first came on the market I was one of the first people (I knew) to try them. As soon as I found a good certificate program I jumped on it.

I recently came across my Lash Extension Certification Certificate and that prompted me to make this post. I don't actually offer this on my service menu but I went thru the course and can answer questions if you have some.

I have had eyelash extensions myself and enjoyed them but what I found for me that I like as a routine is an eyelash serum coupled with a 3D fiberlash mascara. I find this a more affordable option than the expense of extensions which I recommend only for special occasions like a vacation or important trip or wedding. I happen to have fairly long lashes anyway and a serum (like latisse) really makes a huge difference for me. I have friends with more "normal" length lashes and the serum doesn't give them the bang for their buck they are looking for. Still, extensions for long-term are, in my opinion, a bad idea. Special occasion only is my opinion and I'm sticking to that.

For fiber lash mascara I use Cherry Blossom which I used to sell in the salon but didn't find much demand for. Between Cherry Blossom and Younique I probably like Younique better because it's "blacker" and looks more dramatic. The Cherry Blossom is good but a bit "natural" ..so if that's what you are looking for, maybe go with Cherry Blossom.

For serum I LOVED LiLash but it's not available anymore (and my secret back stash is all gone -think Elaine's "sponge" stash from Seinfeld - lol). I am using a few different serums now and recently got a new one called NeuLash from Skin Research Laboratories that I have high hopes for. Once I use up my current experimental one (that I don't love) I will try it out. Fingers crossed!

Trifecta 2015

I am SO excited to be going to this amazing show to see Industry Icon's like Kevin Murphy's Tony Ricci and Keune's George Alderette & Roy Peters. (Ok, this will be the second time I've seen Roy.. but that's kind of even cooler!).

I think it's important to stay plugged in to educational opportunities and keep yourself sharp and creatively stimulated. Having opened the salon last year I didn't do much by way of continuing education (ok, I took three local classes - but no big shows or travel) so I'm getting back to into the more in-depth education this year. I'm so excited to be inspired by some of the big names in the industry!!

I'll try and get some cool photos at the show.
Stay tuned!!

Advanced Balayage Class...

I was so happy to be able to take an advanced balayage class at Salon Metro this past fall (11/3/14) with Seattle's resident balayage expert Sasha LaBeau - yes that is a shout-out, you can book with her at Salon Metro in Wallingford.

It was an intensive hands on class and went thru the history and theory of the technique (for instance, did you know that "balayage" literally means "to sweep?") as well as reprogrammed our eyes for looking at color in the hair in a completely different way.

My photos werent that great because I was really focused on learning and doing but I managed to snap a few.. here's my first model in her processing phase:

Balayage is different than foiling in many ways but the most obvious is that instead of foil we use cotton and cellophane wrap, which lets us watch the hair as it processes. Generally, balayage is supposed to look very natural and subtle. But many clients really want a more dramatic effect. I find balayage is great to use on a natural blonde to enhance what nature already does.. especially when that blonde hangs out at the beach ;)

It was really fun to be reinvigorated and re-inspired for color! So grateful to Sasha and the team at Salon Metro for letting me in on this great opportunity to learn from a pioneer in this technique.

Here are the finished model photos.. Mandie is a highly foiled blonde who had 4-6 inches of grow-out. I was able to blend her previous highlights with the technique and still give her the blonde 'pop' she was looking for. Genevieve (bottom) was a virgin dark blonde and we did a conservative lightening with chunky sections to give her a subtle 'sun-kissed' look. It turned out beautifully but we revisited it later to give her more punch to the blonde. It was a little more subtle than she had hoped for. Still, it was a great day and both ladies were lovely models and good sports for letting me learn on them.

Eyelash Extensions

I recently got certified to do eyelash extensions although I am not currently set up to offer these as a service. I would refer you to my friend and teacher Tracy Powers if you are interested in getting them for yourself. http://www.tracyfskincare.com/default.html I may begin offering them sometime next year.

These photos are of my first practice model - they turned out great if I do say so myself! If you have questions about eyelash extensions or the process please do let me know!

*Note: (5/19/2015) Although I enjoy them, I decided not to ad them to my service menu however I am happy answer any questions you might have!

Tim Hartley Show at The Fenix

I went to the Tim Hartley show with my friend and fellow stylist, Vanessa Pugliese (Salon Blast, Seattle). Tim left the corporate world of hair after a 30 year career at Vidal Sassoon culminating in his renowned role as International Creative Director to concentrate on his own stunning visions of hair design.

Events like these for hairdressers are basically conferences with demonstrations of various techniques and designs usually performed by a famous veteran hairdresser like Tim. There are lots of lights, music and glamour. It's very fun! I really enjoyed it and it was so nice to see people I hadn't seen in a long time - I saw at least 5 people I went to beauty school with and three from Habitude. It was very nice to catch up with everyone.. Below are photos of the models from Tim Hartley's collections, several are ones he cut and styled on stage during the show:
