Another No Heat Wave Technique...

More quarantine experimentation with easy hair styling tricks. This time I used these noodle curlers two different ways. Both ways worked equally well for the most part, with the first lasting a bit longer than the second. The first time I tried it I put them in before bed and slept on them. The styling worked well but the bags under my eyes from a horrible nights sleep.. not so good.

I really liked the way my hair came out though so I tried another way. I showered as usual and blow dried my hair and then put the noodles in. Now this way requires sitting under one of these for 20 minutes at high heat while you scroll through your phone:

I know not everybody has one of these just sitting around their house like I do, so this might not be the most practical. Also, after the 20 minutes of your hair heating up you need it to cool completely in order to set the curl. I just did my makeup and picked up around the house and then removed the noodles. I love the way it turned out but now that I know about the bathrobe tie method, that is my preferred method. It's the post before this one, you can scroll down and read all about it.

Here's how the noodles turned out:

You can see in the bottom left square that the curls had loosened up quite a bit. They do come out of the noodles quite tight and curly and I prefer them loosened anyway but I thought I should mention it. The bathrobe method stayed consistent pretty much the entire day. I'm not sure if that's from sleeping on them overnight or what but in general, I do think the bathrobe method is superior. The only thing I prefer the noodles for is that I like to wash my hair in the morning everyday but I'm willing to sacrifice and just wash it every other day for the sake of awesome curls!

Happy Styling!!

No Heat Easy Waves

I saw this tip on TikTok and thought I would give it a try during quarantine. Needless to say it is an amazing hair hack and I am sure I will be using it weekly for a very long time to come. You take a bathrobe belt and wrap your hair around it, almost like braids, on either side of your head. Secure with Rubberbands. Important to use it on dry hair, not wet, otherwise it would be very unlikely to be dry in the morning. After I made the 'braids' with the belt, I gave it a once over with a light mist of water from a spray bottle. I will probably try using a little bit of Olaplex No. 3 next time prior to wrapping it on the belt.

One of the best things about this is that it is super comfortable to sleep in!

I have an Instagram account and I posted the original TikTok tutorial on that account right before the post with these same photos if you are interested.

Hey Lynn, I just washed it this morning and it is CRAZY how different my hair is. It is definitely curly, but a much, much looser curl that what it was before, and it is soooooooo soft. I can tell there are going to be a few days of "growing pains" as I figure out how to style my new hair. Like this morning I tried to use the diffuser and realized that I had to change the setting to low, instead of the high that I normally use. But one of my co-workers described it as "romantic" and everyone (including me) really likes how it looks. All in all, totally successful and crazy that my hair can actually still be curly, just a completely different kind of curl! I will send you photos as soon as I take them. (Oh, and I am also totally in love with the Pureology Hydrating shampoo and conditioner I bought; they smell SO good!)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Keratin Smoothing by Coppola

So, a picture is worth a thousand words right? Here are the before and afters from my certification class today:

Some brief information about this process:

This smoothing process really IS non-damaging as no bonds in the hair are being broken. Japanese Straightening, Thermal Reconstruction (TR) and traditional relaxers damage the hair even though the hair is typically left FEELING good. With this process the hair feels good AND is not damaged. Really! Over time, damaged hair is actually healed from within, it is not just cosmetic smoothing!

The process is formaldehyde free. It is almost a chemical free process (by FDA guidelines it IS chemical free but what that really means is that there is less than 1% of chemicals in the solution so I would like to just throw FDA propaganda to the curb.. 1% is very little chemical but I thought people would like to know) and there is no formaldehyde (which as you may remember from other posts was my beef with the Brazilian Straightening and why I decided not to do it).

Technically this is not a straightening procedure, though that is basically the end result – this is a frizz eliminator or smoothing procedure and also a conditioning treatment. Straighter hair is a nice side benefit. Smooth, soft, manageable hair is the goal though.

Once this is done, you CAN curl your hair with a curling iron and have waves. Also, this lasts 3 to 6 months and reverts slowly over time. Using a shampoo without sodium chloride extends the life of the service and the hair reverts back to it’s natural state at a slower rate. You can also color and bleach on the same day of service (as long as it is before, if you want to color after, wait 2 weeks).

I’ve thought about how to price this... some people charge by the hour, others by the amount of product used. I have decided to go at a flat rate of $250 stating that this will probably take about 3 to 3 and a half hours. If you have short hair or not very dense hair and the process is significantly shorter because of that I will adjust accordingly. Also, if you are interested in having this done only in a particular area and not the whole head (for example just the bangs) I can accommodate that in the pricing as well, but over all – a $250 flat rate applies.

ps. this model is in need of a haircut, but there was no time to address that in the class.

Beautiful Curls!

My client sent me these photos that were taken for her work and as you can see, her hair just looks lovely. I actually flat iron her hair out when I cut it to make sure she is getting the most precise layers. I think it's important because she doesn't get it done all that often so when she does get it done we want it to keep the best shape possible for a long, long time. Plus, she never wears her hair straight so it's fun for her to have it flat ironed..

It just makes me feel good to look at them so I am posting them here.

Testimonial...

So, I asked Carole (the woman who's photos are a few posts down who had half her hair Thermal Reconditioned - also known as a Thermal Relaxer) to write a little bit about her experience and she actually did it! Wow!! (thanks so much Carole!!!)

Here's what she emailed me:
I have some exciting news to share with you. It's my hair "miracle". I happen to have this crazy type of hair, straight on the top and sides and curly in back. I could deal with the waves (added body) but after the birth of my daughter, the waves turned into an unruly, obnoxious, time consuming tangle. My attempts to match the front and back left me either looking like a poodle or having to spend an inordinate amount of time (blow dry) and money (products) to straighten the back. And girls, you know how hard it is working behind your head! Anyway, Lynn Caldeiro at E-Clips salon has been my hair expert for years and when she suggested a new Japanese hair technique that would give me no-fuss, healthy, straight hair, I couldn’t sign up fast enough. It was easy, albeit time consuming (6 hrs.) but the wait was worth it.

First, I arrived at Lynn’s E-Clips at 9:00 am. (a little about Lynn: she is very professional, talented and a genuinely good person. You’ll love her.) Anyway, Lynn had suggested I bring a book (and what mother wouldn’t look forward to hours of uninterrupted time?). I’d recommend any special snacks you might desire also. I sat in her chair as she applied a pre-relaxant . This needs to be combed through carefully and then thoroughly dried. This was repeated several times which takes lots of time. Then it was time for the actual relaxant. ( it smells similar to a perm). Lynn was careful to comb the product though each strand of hair, helping it to straighten out. She was very meticulous. Then it was time to dry again. (Drying was a combination of a hand held dryer and sitting in a chair surrounded by warm noisy air.) In my case, Lynn didn’t need to “straighten” my whole head, so she put conditioner on my naturally straight parts. I was offered water, tea, food and the time seemed to fly by. (a great novel helped) Soon it was time to see the final result. A thorough wash (love the scalp massage), a comb out, a blow dry and that’s when you’d think the miracle happened. But no. I was astonished, my hair was shiny and soft and yes, straight a mere 6 hrs later. Now as always, I loved the way Lynn had finished my hair but the true test was to happen days from then, at home. YES, miracle upon miracle, I could reproduce Lynn’s version of straight hair by myself. She hadn’t exaggerated.

I can still easily maintain it with or without blow drying. Yes, without drying and my husband not only loves the look but loves that it takes no time. I would highly recommend this procedure for any of you with annoyingly curly hair. There is a miracle out there for you. Thank you, thank you, thank you Lynn Caldeiro!

**********************************

Note from Lynn: I also love curly hair, but in Carole's case, relaxing (TR) was the best option because she wanted her hair very straight, she fought to manage it, she was only half curly and she has fine hair.

I do TR (Thermal Relaxing aka Thermal Reconditioning) but Josephine Geise is the resident expert on normal chemical relaxers, she's been doing them for 20+ years and I've seen first hand how great she is. Most people shy away from the regular thioglycolic and other chemical relaxing processes because if you apply them wrong you can do real damage - but Josephine is meticulous and will not over process your hair. If you have that kinky, coarse, hard to manage hair and want to tame the curls (not make them bone straight) a regular relaxer is probably a good option for you and it's only a fraction of the cost (and time) of Thermal Relaxing.

More Thermal Straightening Photos!

Carole is a perfect candidate for partial straightening as she has straight hair on the top and sides of her hair but the back and underneath are cury, getting the most curly near the nape.. (and yes, I do her color too!)

BEFORE:

I did the Thermal Reconstructing straightener (no, not brazillian) in the curly section and a moisturizing thermal treatment in the rest (for a deep deep conditioning effect) and Viola!

Let me just show that to you again folks...

BEFORE:

AFTER:

And just a few more for fun...

I've decided that I am not going to invest in the training for the Brazilian Straightening at this time because a) I have not found a product I like and b) I'm not sure it's worth it as the current trend is waves these days.. I've been told there is a salon in Burien that does the Brazilian Straightening, but I don't know what product they use.. If you are looking for that particular kind of relaxer - you'll have to call around. I've been very happy with the results I get with my Thermal Relaxing system and it really does make the hair softer and more manageable. I almost want to say it IMPROVES the texture of the hair (if I didn't know better I'd say it wasn't damaging, but technically it is breaking bonds and re-arranging them so that would be inaccurate.. and you know what a stickler I am for these things!). I am going to extend my current deal of $400 until the end of the year (December 31, 2008). That's not much more than the Brazilian Treatment, it's permanent and it leaves the hair in excellent condition.

One last thing...
Vote Obama!
Ciao all.

Great Short Hair!

I had a really fun haircut today and I was so excited about it I forgot to take "before" shots - but the afters are so cute I think it's ok! See for yourself:

Lia came to see me because I do the hair of a friend of hers that she liked a lot. It was similar in shape to what we did here. It's a very fluid and flattering shape for short hair, especially short hair that has some natural body such as Lia's.

In describing the cut she wanted, Lia (brilliantly) called it "organic" and I can't think of a better description than that. It hugs the head in all the right ways and accentuates the curve of the neck: very flattering for people who have long slender necks (such as Lia) ..and it also has a way of making a neck APPEAR that way.. tricky-tricky!

When Lia told me she was a Salsa dancer I immediately (though erroneously) made an association with paintings of Flamenco dancers and the swirly tendrils they wear. It all worked out even though Flamenco is Spanish and Salsa is Latin American.. but for purposes of the haircut the association was ok! With the natural curl and wave patterns in her hair we also incorporated a bit of 1920's flapper finger-wave feel to the shaping in the front. I think the whole thing just turned out wonderfully- What to you think?

For me, the key to making this feminine, feisty shape work is the texture of the cut and the attention to fine tuning personal details to make it flattering to the wearer.. it's definitely not a formulaic, one size fits all haircut by any stretch. This is a tailored and personalized hairstyle that, when done well, is effortlessly stylish and timeless.

Anyway.. it was fun to do and I think Lia likes it too!

(NOTE: I just want to say that I had completed this entire post and lost it due to some stupid glitch with blogger.. GRRR!)

Thermal Straightening Model!

Susan agreed to let me post photos of our work together..  A picture is worth a thousand words so here it is:

The process took about 5 hours and you can read more about it

HERE

It was really fun to do such a big change for her, even though I love curly hair I must agree with her that her hair looks better straight. It just gives her a more polished look. Also, with how curly it is she'll have no problem most "real" straight hair people have which is flatness as it grows longer! She can have the best of all possible world with lustrous shiny straight hair that has volume on top. The weight of the straightened part should weigh the new growth down enough that this should last her at least 8 months to a year! Hooray for Susan!!

It was really fun to do and see such a radical change! (plus to seeing how happy it made her was really fun too!) She may be sending me an email about how it's been for her so far and if she does, I'll post it here too.

Curly Correction...

I have a fun one yesterday! Curley hair, which I LOVE and I got to make it beautiful again. Amy had gone to a salon in South Seattle and had a guy bleach the hell out of her hair using some sort of balayage method that left her hair quite damaged and also very yellow. When it was first done it was red and bleach applied straight to the hair in big sections with no foil or cotton or anything (sounds weird to me). The red faded out entirely and left her with an all over yellow color that was a stark contrast from her natural color and showed extreme grow-out. Overall it just looked sort of harsh and damaged.

I foiled in back to back highlights of two shades of high-lift blonde (ash and violet). I did this because we needed to lift through whatever color was left in there and also needed to lift the grow-out. I also added in a regular blonde (8/9 natural). In between all the foils I used a color gloss to add shine and to cover the bleached out yellow with a nice medium blonde tone. This left the hair much more shiny overall and it felt better after coloring rather than more damaged.

I like the neutral tones with her skin tone. I only wish I had taken more close ups of the color, but it's still a fun "before and after"

Notes about curly hair:
Curly hair is much drier and more fragile than straight hair and because of that, shampooing every day can be very drying/damaging. Signs of over-shampooing are dry, frizzy, unmanageable hair. On top of the damage from the bleach used on her hair, Amy was using shampoo every time she washed her hair (about every other day). I suggested she ween off of using shampoo all together and start only washing her hair with conditioner. This is an excellent suggestion for anyone with moderate to very curly hair as the extra moisture keeps the hair weighted down and prevents frizz. Conditioner will clean your scalp when used like a shampoo, simply apply it to the scalp and work it in like you are lathering up shampoo - of course the conditioner won't lather, but it's working just the same. The hard part is really just mentally adjusting to not using shampoo any more. Some people freak out that their hair is not getting "clean enough." I know it won't help if I just tell you that it is so if this is a concern for you, I suggest you start slowly. Transition gradually into washing with conditioner only: shampoo with shampoo the first day, condiditoner the second - continue like this every other day for a few cycles and then start going every two days (shampoo, conditioner, conditioner, shampoo, conditioner, conditioner etc.) and so on and so on. Trust me. Your hair will be clean and MUCH more manageable with less breakage and feel softer to the touch.
